Wonder Girls push back U.S. activities

K-pop girl band Wonder Girls have temporarily halted their activities in the United States following the replacement of member Mimi who will leave the group at the end of this month.

According to the girls’ agency JYP Entertainment, their U.S. tour and the release of their first full-length album in the country has been delayed. Both had been set to take place in late February.

JYP has yet to set a new date for the tour but have confirmed the album will be released in April.

The decision for the postponement comes after the departure of Mimi, who announced earlier this month of returning to Korea to focus on her studies. New member Lim will fill in Mimi’s place and work with the group on their upcoming ventures.

Lim, 17-years-old, was a JYP trainee for three years and is said to speak four languages — Korean, English, Mandarin and Cantonese. She had originally been preparing to debut as a member of the Chinese version of the Wonder Girls.

The Korean quintet made their debut in 2007 with their first single album “The Wonder Begins”. They have been a sensation in the country, placing three singles on top of music charts consecutively.

The girls made a successful crossover to the United States last year with their debut single “Nobody,” placing in at No. 76 in the Billboard Hot 100, to become the first Korean artists to enter the prestigious chart.

Wonder Girls’ ‘Nobody’ Voted Video of the Year in U.S.

The music video for the song “Nobody” by Korean pop group the Wonder Girls was named “Video of the Year” by a U.S.-based music website.

In an online poll for 80 videos conducted by Musiqtone.com until Sunday, the video for the English version of “Nobody” received 1,249,080 votes or 37 percent of the total to claim the top position.

The runner-up, “Automatic” by German band Tokio Hotel, garnered 400,000 fewer votes for 24 percent of the total.

Musiqtone.com provides news and multimedia content about albums and music videos in the U.S. The Wonder Girls were one of the nominees for the website’s “Artist of the Month” last September.

Heavy voting by Korean netizens may be the reason “Nobody” shot to the top. The poll allowed individuals to vote up to 50 times a day.

The Wonder Girls made their U.S. debut last fall with the English version of “Nobody,” which became the first song ever by a Korean artist to enter the Billboard Hot 100 in October when it ranked 76th.

Looks like recent circulating rumors are true – after their very successful run with the Jonas Brothers, the Wonder Girls will be opening for yet another American pop sensation: Justin Bieber!

As the Wonderful fanbase may recall, the rumors were sparked last month when the Wonder Girls revealed on an interview that they would possibly open for a famous male Canadian artist at an upcoming concert. Wonder Girls are #1 on the Billboard Year End Charts!

That’s right folks, Korea’s very own Wonder Girls, who took the world by storm with their ever-so-addictive hits, Tell Me, So Hot, and Nobody, have made it once again on America’s Billboard Charts, but, this time, as #1!

Last year, the girls made their U.S. debut by opening all summer for the Jonas Brothers and their nationwide tour, giving the girls exposure to the American public and young tweens. Since then, the five members have released an English version of Nobody and also a remix by widely-known DJ / producer / remixer Jason Nevins. In late October the girls made it on the Billboard Top 100, ranking at 76th place. However, their glory was short-lived as they fell off the charts after only a week.

Now that 2009 is over, the Billboard wrapped it up and declared Wonder Girls and their track Nobody #1 on the Year End Charts Hot Singles Sales section, beating out big U.S. artists like Lady Gaga, Beyonce, Black Eyed Peas and more. You can check out the full results HERE.

Wonder Girls will be following up their U.S. debut with an American album next month so tune in!

The Wonder Girls to tour US in January

Wonder Girls Launch Korean Music Invasion.

The Wonder Girls, a five-member, all-girl band from South Korea, took the hit reality show “So You Think You Can Dance” by storm last night (Dec. 9) and may well launch the Korean invasion of U.S. pop music.

The oldest Yubin , 21, joined band in late-2007. Sunye (Sun) is the leader and Ye-eun (Yenny) is the group’s newest member. Both are 20 years old. At 17, Sunmi (Mimi) and Hyunah are the youngest members.

The band’s performance on last night’s show gave them their first exposure before a major U.S. audience, but they have already caught the attention of the music industry, including Dave Stewart, formerly of The Eurythmics.

Stewart is producing their first album, set for release in February.
The group is also planning to launch a headlining U.S. tour in January.

The Wonder Girls became the first Korean singers to ever enter the U.S. singles charts in October, landing at 76 on Top-100 singles charts with virtually no promotion.

They performed the hit “Nobody,” with Kris Allen, the season eight “American Idol’ winner. Allen also performed his newest single “Live Like We’re Dying.”

The girls are already major pop stars on the Korean peninsula and were introduced as a “pop sensation” on the Fox program’s Web site.

“They are the striking chord with a young U.S. audience,” their producer and manager, singer-songwriter Park Jin-Young, said in a release.

The girls also have opened for the Jonas Brothers on the North American leg of the Jonas Brothers World Tour 2009 and have two No. 1 hits in Korea, “Tell Me” and “So Hot.”

The Wonder Girls appeal to young tween fans because of their cute and easy-to-follow dance moves and lyrics.

In a testament to their potential, the group has signed a management contract with the Jonas Group and Hollywood’s Creative Artists Agency (CAA) which will rep them in the United States.

Stewart announced his collaboration with the Wonder Girls on Twitter over the wekened along with a short demo of “Always Without Me,” which will be on the Girls’ new album.

The Eurythmics, which included Stewart and Annie Lennox, had a string of hits in the 1980s including “Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)” and “Here Comes the Rain Again.”
