5 Things to Know About The Wonder Girls

5 Things to Know About The Wonder Girls
Wondering who The Wonder Girls are? Already a pop phenomenon in Asia, the South Korean pop quintet – which includes members Sun, 20, Yenny, 20, Mimi, 17, Yubin, 21, Sohee, 17 – is making a splash in the U.S. with their infectious bubblegum pop tunes.

Their first single titled “Nobody” landed on the Billboard Hot 100 Singles chart, making them the first group from South Korea to make such a mark in the U.S. But tween girls know them as the group that shared the stage with the Jonas Brothers this past summer.

Here are five fun facts about these five fresh-faced females:

1. They’re tight with the JoBros:
The girl group lived the dream of tween girls everywhere: They spent almost two months with the Jonas Brothers as their opening act for the U.S. leg of their 2009 world tour. The girls bonded with the brothers on the road to the point that Joe has been spotted wearing the Wonder Girls shirt, and on Sun’s birthday in August, the rock trio bought her a cake (cue adoring sighs). At the time, Sun tweeted, “The guys came to me and wished me a happy bday w/a gorgeous cake! Thank you to the Jonas Brothers for making my bday so special!!”

2. Their manager was a ’90s megastar:
The man behind the group is a star in his own right. Singer-songwriter J.Y. Park became a K-pop sensation in the 1990s, releasing seven albums. He later opened an intensive music school called JYP Academy in Seoul where all five Wonder Girls studied before forming the group.

3. They are reality TV veterans:
The girls have already conquered the small screen. MTV Asia created a reality show about them called MTV Wonder Girls, which followed the group in their everyday lives. Also, Sun was the winner of the Korean equivalent of American Idol called Special Project: Developing a Genius before joining the Wonder Girls as the group’s de facto leader.

4. They started an online dance craze:
Their popularity in Asia peaked when the video for their 2007 single “Tell Me” sparked a viral dance craze and inspired fans began to post their own renditions of the moves.

5. Yes, they like dressing alike:
With their ’60s style bobs and doo-wop wardrobe, these sweet-faced girls embrace a retro-Motown vibe. The band told instyle.com that their main fashion inspirations are timeless style icons like Twiggy to Audrey Hepburn.

Wonder Girls Ready for More Challenges

The Wonder Girls reappeared in Korea for their local fans with good news last Friday: they ranked 76 in the Hot 100 of the Billboard chart.

This is the first time in the chart’s 115-year history that a Korean singer or group has ranked in the top 100, according to the five-member group’s agency JYP Entertainment.

The group and its producer Park Jin-young, also known as JYP, held a press conference to share the news and excitement with local fans.

“The Billboard’s Hot 100 is one of the toughest charts to be ranked on. The Wonder Girls is the first Asian group to enter the chart in almost 30 years,” Park said at the event packed with reporters and photographers held at a caf? in Cheongdam-dong, southern Seoul.

“The fact that the song `Nobody’ was played 65 times on the top five radio stations in the U.S. is the equivalent to 650 times on local radio. It’s a miracle.”

The ranking is determined by album sales and radio airtime.

The five members also looked excited to be back home, smiling and posing for the cameras eagerly. Read more… »

Wonder Girls on Infinity Challenge

A surprising piece of news that Star News recently reported has netizens abuzz with curious interest and growing anticipation: K-pop sensation Wonder Girls are rumored to make a special appearance on an upcoming episode of MBC ‘Infinity Challenge.’

How can this be possible, you ask?

Well, if you have been following allkpop closely, you would already know that Yoo Jae Suk, Park Myung Soo and Noh Hong Chul were the lucky members who were chosen to be the ones filming a crime fiction movie and participating in various missions during their upcoming trip to New York City.

Not only that, the group is planning to visit JYP center, where Wonder Girls and JYP are currently located, to show their support for them in the midst of their activities overseas. However, how long and how much camera time Wonder Girls will have depends completely on their schedule. As of now, there is no guarantee, as the girls are busy with preparations and promotions for their official U.S. album.

However, fans in Korea have expressed their gratitude to Kim Tae Ho, the producer of ‘Infinity Challenge,’ for even considering such a rare opportunity to feature Wonder Girls on a Korean variety show.
“Ah please!!!!!!! They need their dduk (sticky rice cake)”
“Wow, the best! I hope both their schedules match well and they film the episode together..”
“Ole!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Really, I truly love Tae Ho PD. I love you and praise you and love you some more!!!!!!!!!”
“You must do this!!! Please
.. TT-TT”
“Tae Ho PD must be a WonderFul too. Thank you so much
.”

Meanwhile, the three regulars and staff will head over to New York around late October and return early November.

Wonder Girls Headed for Justice

As reported earlier, the Wonder Girls are really gearing up for their American debut, first returning to the stage with the Jonas Brothers, then releasing an official remix and finally holding Meet & Greets in Justice stores on the East Coast today & tomorrow!

Justice… wha? Even if you don’t live in the States, many of you readers probably haven’t heard of the Justice store chain. It’s a popular retail fashion store across America aimed at tweens; if you’re like me and past that stage, think of the popular Limited Too of a few years back because they’re under the same company.

Scott Bracale, the president of Tween Brands Inc’s Agency, has expressed confidence in the company’s new partnership with the Girls. The “Nobody” remix CDs are exclusively retailing for just a dollar and have already sold over 17,000 units in the 800 Justice locations that are selling them. With this success, Bracale predicts that the 30,000 CDs in stock will be sold out sometime next week.

It looks like Tween Brands Inc is serious about getting these CDs out – as promotion, the store appeals to both the tweens & parents (the so-called “Tween Network) by continually playing the music video on TV screens in each store.

“Something unique about this partnership … is that we are selling the actual CDs versus the digital downloads,” expressed Leslie Armour, president of the Youth Marketing Group, which consults Tween Brands. “No other retailers are selling the physical CD singles, but … we [have found] that these girls really like to be able to feel and touch what they are purchasing. They like to have it in their hands when they leave the store.”

“Record stores have all pretty much faded or gone away altogether, so for us to be in Justice stores is such a great opportunity,” said JY Park of JYP Entertainment. This is true especially in Korea, the only country in which digital sales currently exceed physical sales, reportedly generating 56% of total music revenue in the country back in 2006. In the states, digital music sales are project to eclipse those of physical CDs by the end of next year.

JY Park continued, “We are getting the tweens excited for this single at a store they not only buy clothes at but they like to spend their time there.”

So how did the Wonder Girls snag such a great partnership with a large company like Tween Brands? “The Wonder Girls struck us as being very tween appropriate,” the president explained. “We are very selective about who we partner with, but if there is something new, different and innovative, we can most certainly deliver the viewership in our stores.”
